Oniscus asellus, also known as the common woodlouse,  is one of the largest and most common species of woodlouse in the Northern and Western Europe and England. The "Mardi Gras Dalmatian" variation, are mostly white speckled with black, with bright yellow spots. Isolated by TJ Ombrelle, this gene affects dark pigmentation but not the light yellows, which is where the enticing spots come from. These isopods breed quickly once established, and do best when provided a varied diet rich with protein.
