Madagascar Hissing Cockroach
Difficulty: Beginner
Housing: Cricket keepers and 10 gallon aquariums work great for these guys. Note: they can climb nearly everything so a fine mesh screen in addition to a standard lid is ideal to keep babies from escaping.
Food Preferences: Fruit and veggie scraps (bell peppers are a big favorite), carrots, Reptanicals' Cricket Feast, carrots, Reptanicals' Shredded Shrimp, tortoise pellets and dry vegetable based pastas are also happily accepted
Temp Requirements: approx. 65 Degrees to 85 Degrees. Extreme cold and heat can be lethal
Breeding: Easy
Substrate: Coconut coir, peat moss, or Reptanicals' Bug Bedding, slightly moist on one side
Humidity: mostly dry, slightly damp substrate on one side will provide enough humidity for egg health and proper molting.
Enrichment: Provide cork bark or other tube style places for your roaches to hide. They prefer tight spaces just large enough for them to fit, but not much bigger.
NOTE: We suggest a bio-active set up with both springtails and isopods to keep your roach enclosure clean. They are nature's janitorial crew and to eat any leftover or hidden food that may mold. (Roaches like to pull their food into their hides if they can, so sometimes mold may be out of sight.)
