Armadillidium gestroi Isopods , also known as High Yellow spotted isopods, originate from the shores of France near limestone, sandstone, and granite. They thrive on vegetables, dried leaves, grasses, and decaying matter. This striking roly poly rolls up into a ball when disturbed or threatened.
These are large isopods that are slower growing. They can take a little longer to establish than other species. However they have fairly large broods and once established are extremely rewarding. Great pet species for someone looking for a colorful addition to their terrarium. A gestroi can often exhibit a range of colors from neon yellow to pumpkin orange.

A. gestroi
Difficulty: Intermediate
Size: .79 inches.
Housing: Plastic storage bin or glass terrarium
Food Preferences: freeze dried shrimp, fish flakes, vegetables, dried leaves, wood, grasses, and decaying matter, Reptanicals Isopod Feast
Temp Requirements: approx. 70 Degrees to 85 Degrees. Extreme cold and heat can be lethal
Breeding: Easy - with proper care sub-adults will begin to breed before reaching full size, but this slower growing species can take a few months to really establish themselves.
Substrate: Coconut coir, peat moss, or Reptanicals Bug Bedding: Isopod Substrate, covered with leaf litter (we use oak leaves).
Humidity: medium humidity, mist one side of enclosure to create a moisture gradient, keep sphagnum and/or pillow moss on the moist side of enclosure to help maintain humidity (we use a mixture of both)
Supplements: Reptanicals 5-in-1 Calcium Supplement: a great mix of natural calcium sources for these isopods, all derived from the same calcium sources they would encounter in the wild such as limestone, granite and coral. Reptanicals Shredded Shrimp, a tasty treat to offer for additional protein.
Hides: Cork bark, lotus pods, coconut halves and egg carton all make excellent hides for the isopods. Adding multiple hides to your enclosure offers ample room for juveniles and adults, and also provides your isopods a more enriching environment.
